Plovdiv marked World Water Day with a happening

Children from 16 schools in Plovdiv traditionally celebrated World Water Day together on 22 March in Plovdiv. The happening was organised by the East Aegean Sea Basin Directorate, Plovdiv Municipality, “Water Supply and Sewerage” Ltd and the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIOSV) - Plovdiv. Their representatives opened the celebration and congratulated the young environment enthusiasts gathered in the sports hall of St Patriarch Evtimiy School in the city of the hills.

The pupils enthusiastically displayed their own works, made especially for the occasion. In areas set aside for the purpose, each school exhibited paintings, models, posters and sculptures by its talented pupils. Models with mountains, rivers, seas and fountains with running water could be seen among the skilfully realised ideas. The works contained tips and examples of environmentally friendly solutions to water problems. The models of the water cycle made a particular impression, as did the young people’s ecological ideas for water purification and sustainable use of water. Treatment plants, a hand-made “Red Book” and a model of the dream river Maritsa made from recycled materials were among the memorable exhibits. Great colour was added by the eye-catching chemistry experiments with water demonstrated by experts from the Regional Laboratory of the Executive Environment Agency. The young ecologists were genuinely delighted to receive small live fish as a special gift for the holiday, provided by the Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

In 2018 the theme of the day is “Nature for Water”, and the name of the campaign is “The Answer Is in Nature”. It focuses on applying nature-based solutions to the challenges we face today. Its aim is to inform people about effective ways of restoring the balance of the water cycle and mitigating the effects of climate change, and thereby of improving human health and quality of life in general.
